Cameroon: Inclusive Political Participation for Young People with Disabilities Remains a Significant Challenge
A training workshop for networks of young people and social media on the rights and participation of young people with disabilities in public and political life was organized by the Ministry of Communication in partnership with Sightsavers in Mbalmayo, Nyong and So'o Division, on September 26, 2024.
Despite efforts by the government and its partners, the political participation of young people with disabilities in Cameroon remains limited. People with disabilities, who are full citizens, have the same rights as others, including the right to vote and participate in governance. However, persistent obstacles hinder their political participation, including institutional barriers, lack of official documents, limited access to voting offices and public places, information deficits, ignorance of texts regulating the promotion and protection of people with disabilities' rights, and socio-economic exclusion.
The workshop aimed to inform, sensitize, and mobilize stakeholders to promote massive participation of young people with disabilities in political activities, inclusive media coverage, and equip social media actors with knowledge on the rights of young people with disabilities.
The workshop featured five presentations on topics such as the experience of working with platforms, identifying barriers to political participation, legal frameworks, and government measures for inclusive participation.
Sandra Rimoh from Sightsavers emphasized the importance of empowering young people with disabilities to build an inclusive society. Monsieur Ngankak, DMPP of Mincom, highlighted the crucial role of social media and online press in promoting inclusive participation.
